The iceberg

Most of us know that when someone asks us how we’re doing, we’re not telling the full truth.

But there’s another level to this: when we ask ourselves the same question, we’re often not honest either. About what we’re really feeling. About what beliefs we have going on inside. About what our thought processes actually are.

We do it as a way of making it easier to cope. If we really investigated all the different feelings and belief systems we have going on inside, we’d see very clearly that these are not things society tends to celebrate. These are things that are shunned, put down, shamed. And so we have this defense mechanism that kicks in and says: better not to even admit or experience these things. Let’s stuff them back down. Good vibes only. Let’s pretend everything’s okay.

But think about an iceberg. You only see the top when you’re looking out in the water, but really, there’s so much more going on underneath the surface. And all of that is actually what’s more dangerous than what we see above.

So it is with ourselves. There’s all this programming, all this subconscious β€” these thoughts and beliefs and feelings underneath the surface β€” that are really what’s running the show. It’s less about our cognitive, active thinking, and more about what’s underlying things.

If we want to actively improve our lives, we have to get a sense of what is underneath that surface.

That’s the work.
