You don’t actually need a blanket
When you say “I need a blanket,” you don’t actually need a blanket.
You need warmth. Or comfort. Or maybe containment.
The blanket is just a strategy.
We do this constantly. “I need a spa day.” “I need my husband to help more.” “I need some alone time.”
These are all strategies — specific ways we think a need could get met. But they’re not the need itself.
And – when you can name the actual need, you’re no longer locked into one solution.
If all the blankets are taken, you can find another way to get warm.
The strategy can be negotiated. The need doesn’t have to be abandoned.
What strategy have you been calling a need, and what is the underlying need?
Supporting your sensitivity,
Rena
