When they only see you after you soften

Have you ever had someone tell you they could finally feel close to you after you became vulnerable?

As if your defended self wasn’t worthy of connection. As if they needed you to crack open before they could see your humanity.

But: Those who can only see you when you’re soft. When you’re “real.” When you’re broken open…

That means they can’t actually SEE you. They can only see the parts that mirror their own woundedness or that make them feel safe.

That’s conditional acceptance.

Real seeing doesn’t wait for you to break. Real compassion doesn’t require you to soften first. Real relationship sees you when you’re defended AND when you’re open.

If someone can only feel compassion for you after you’ve shown vulnerability, pay attention.

That might not be the safety you think it is.
