28 – Bonnie R. Giller, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE – How to manage a health condition alongside IE
In this episode I talk to Bonnie R. Giller, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE, about how to how to manage a health condition alongside IE, and how the two are not a contradiction.
Here are some great quotes from this episode:
For all those years, I would have to be the one trying to figure out why the client gained a quarter pound. I don't know why your body did what it did. Now it was, "Oh my gosh, it's in my court. I have to make decisions." It was a really big shift for her.
Weight loss is not a behavior. It's an outcome of habit and behavior change, if that's what the body is intending to do. So how can a physician let that patient leave the office with a script to see a dietitian and the prescription is weight loss? It's so irresponsible.
I'm thinking of all the patients I have that are so happy because the stress is lifted. There was so much stress placed upon them that they have to lose weight. They look at the doctor and say, "You know what, been there, done that, heard that, it doesn't work, so can you tell me something else?" They can't tell you something else, but I can.
The moment I tell someone, "We're not addressing weight," I can't even tell you how they light up. It's like a brick is lifted off their shoulders.
People who have disordered eating or bordering on an eating disorder, often have GI issues that are caused by the ED. Sometimes what happens is once we normalize their eating and really move them through that intuitive process, the gut symptoms really resolve.
So many people say, "Nutrition therapy cannot go with IE." Hogwash! It absolutely can! Absolutely! Yes, we CAN really help people who have medical conditions through an IE approach.
