The 30-Second Shift
Deep somatic work doesn’t have to take a full session. It doesn’t even have to take long.
What we are looking for, for experiential work to be effective, are those few moments within a session where something finally shifts.
A client feels a sensation that is unclear. They fumble for the words to describe it. They finally find the right word, the system settles, and something shifts.
If you are able to stay with the sensation long enough for them to find the word, that felt-shift can happen in 30 seconds.
You don’t have to contradict or throw away the modalities you are already using. You just need to know how to anchor into those few moments of settling.

This week’s book recommendation: If this email resonated with you, I recommend The Power of Focusing by Ann Weiser Cornell. Cornell writes about the felt sense — that vague, unclear something inside that already knows more than your words do — and how to turn toward it with curiosity instead of pushing past it. A warm, practical guide to learning the practice that Gendlin developed, written by one of the world’s leading Focusing teachers.
