Learning a different language
The world is, by far and large, emotionally illiterate.
Most women can’t recognize their own feelings. Can’t identify what they need.
So when someone tells you “just express your needs to your husband” – it sounds simple.
But you’re standing there thinking: what needs? I don’t even know what I’m feeling right now!
You know you snapped at them. You know you’re exhausted. You know something feels off.
But if someone asked you to name the feeling? You’d struggle.
And if they asked what you need to feel different? Forget it!
This is a different language.
Especially when you’ve been independent your whole life – just pushing through, handling everything yourself – you never needed to get fluent in your own emotional world.
But real interdependence requires it.
You have to slow down enough to notice: I’m feeling this.
Then translate it into: I need this.
And then – the hardest part – ask your husband to help meet that need.
It takes time. It takes practice. It takes vulnerability.
Start small. Notice when you’re tired. Name it to yourself.
Notice when you’re overwhelmed. Lonely. Frustrated. Practice naming the feeling.
Then see if you can identify what you need. Connection? Space? Help? Rest?
You don’t have to ask for it yet. Just practice recognizing it.
That’s where learning to need your husband begins – with learning this language of feelings and needs first.
What are you feeling right now?
Supporting your sensitivity,
Rena
