Shouldn’t we treat everyone this way?

I was reading a book about personality types and communication styles.

It explained how Earth types – people who are highly sensitive – need to be spoken to very carefully. With validation, understanding, no contradictions or arguments.

And as I read through all the rules, I kept thinking: but shouldn’t we just talk to everyone this way?

I’ve been so deeply immersed in nonviolent communication for many years, which really helps us see the tzelem Elokim in every person.

It’s about recognizing that there’s another human being in front of you with their own rich inner world. That no matter what they’re saying or how they’re behaving, if you can tap into that – you help them feel like a human being, not just an accessory to whatever’s going on in your life.

So when I read “here’s how to talk to sensitive people,” my brain couldn’t separate it. Because isn’t this just… how we should talk to everyone?

Every person needs dignity. Every person needs to feel valued. That’s universal.

Yes, some people react more strongly when those needs aren’t met. Earth types get hurt more easily, take longer to get over things, rely more on external validation.

But that doesn’t mean everyone else is fine with being treated carelessly!

We have halachos about onaas devarim – being careful not to offend people when we talk. This is a fundamental concept.

The sensitive people are showing us what the baseline should be.

What might your sensitivity point to what is fundamental for all people?

Supporting your sensitivity,
