The nervous system paradox

Here’s something counterintuitive about dysregulation:

When someone’s nervous system has detected danger and they’re in fight/flight, they will unconsciously view anyone trying to “help” them as a perpetrator on some level.

Even when you have the best intentions. Even when you love them. Even when your advice is actually good.

Their dysregulated system reads your solutions as additional threat.

Not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because their prefrontal cortex is offline and their nervous system is filtering everything through a lens of danger.

This is why the person you’re trying to help sometimes gets MORE upset when you offer solutions. You’re not calming them down – you’re inadvertently confirming their system’s perception that something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

What their nervous system actually needs is evidence that they’re safe to have their experience exactly as it is.

Only then can they come back online and access the rational part of their brain that can actually hear your help.
