This is not a competition

This one started as a WhatsApp status post. If you want to catch these as they come, reach out to me at 347-871-1848 and I’ll make sure you’re on my contacts list.

People outside of Israel that I’ve asked how they are say the same thing:

“Things are ok — compared to what you’re going through!”

To which I respond: “There’s always someone who has it worse somewhere. Can you give validation to your own experience?”

Even what I am personally going through here — there are people who have it way worse:

People without a shelter in their home.
People who live right next to the border with Lebanon and have zero seconds versus my 30.
People who live in more densely populated places that unfortunately have had way more direct hits, murders, and damage.

That doesn’t make my experience “nothing compared to theirs”. The experience I’m going through is unique to me.

So wherever you are in the world, with whatever struggles you are currently experiencing, can you validate the difficulty that you are going through?

Offer yourself some self-compassion: “Yeah, this is really hard. I’m struggling right now.”

Feel your feelings.
Hold yourself close.
Let yourself emote.

This being human is not a competition.

Each of us is a whole world.
Take up the space Hashem made for you.

The story above is about not minimizing what you’re carrying. This teaching is about not minimizing the actions you take:
