YOUR world, not THE world
There’s a line in Mesilas Yesharim – one my husband reminds me of often – that changed how I think about obligations:
“Mah chovaso be’olamo” – what is your obligation in your world?
Not THE world. YOUR world.
You and I live in the same world, but we also have our own worlds we’re meant to impact.
Your obligations are going to be different than mine. Based on who you are. Your strengths. Your limitations.
The chesed one person does will be different than what’s expected from someone else in a different situation, in their world.
For me, when I was a programmer, one of my main forms of chesed was working for chesed organizations at very low cost or contributing my time for free.
Someone else’s might be cooking meals. Hosting guests. Learning as a chavrusa.
There’s no hierarchy. There’s just: what’s the chesed that fits YOUR world?
Because Hashem doesn’t need us to do chesed. It’s not that Hashem needs YOU specifically to be the one to do it. It’s an opportunity for us.
What He ask of you is to show up in YOUR world, with YOUR capacity, and contribute what you actually can.
Not what you think you should be able to. Not what someone else can do.
What you can do, in your world, within your window of Menuchas Hanefesh.
What does your world need from you?
Supporting your sensitivity,
Rena
