I was the best person to give myself business advice
Men, in general, have a very consistent stream of energy. They’re able to go and get things done and accomplished. Women have ups and downs in our energy levels, over the course of a day, and over the course of the month.
A masculine way of building a business says: here are the structures, here are the steps, here’s your 5-day plan or your 30-day plan — fill in the blanks, hit the benchmarks, you’re good to go.
And of course, women need structure too. But it needs to be a more fluid structure, because our energy and our capacity run on a different level.
If I had kept building my business strictly according to what the marketing books said I was supposed to do, it would have led me to long-term burnout — and it did, for a while.
So someone once asked me who the best person was that I ever got business advice from. And I said: me! Because I slowed down enough to listen to what I actually needed within the structure.
We’re not throwing out the framework. We still need one. But within that framework, I need to listen to my inner world, my instincts, about what actually works for me.
For a woman, pushing through on something that doesn’t feel right tends to create a much stronger dissonance, because we’re more connected to our emotional world.
If you’re a practitioner, this is the felt-sense principle applied to business strategy itself — the same inner attunement you teach clients to bring to their bodies applies just as much to how they build and run their work.
And if you’re building something of your own: the plan that worked for someone else’s nervous system might not work for yours.

This week’s book recommendation: If this email resonated with you, I recommend When I Start My Business, I’ll Be Happy by Sam Vander Wielen. The title is the whole thing — that forward projection, the idea that the business will eventually get built and then life will settle. Vander Wielen writes from inside the experience of online entrepreneurship, and the book is practical: legal foundations, early pitfalls, how to keep growing without losing yourself in the process. Where most business books hand you a strategy, this one asks you to take yourself seriously as the person running it. Order a copy here — this is an affiliate link which doesn’t cost you anything extra and helps support my work.
