Do you have a daily self-attunement practice?

Many of the women I work with are stuck in functional freeze.

They’re showing up and delivering. From the outside, everything looks fine. But underneath, the nervous system is oscillating between fight/flight and shutdown.

They’ve learned to function so well on top of it that the disconnection has become the baseline. But the body keeps track. It always does.

And passive self-care, such as a massage, an acupuncture session, or even breathwork, are wonderful. But they’re not a practice of attunement.

Here’s what the research shows about what happens when we don’t actively attune to our inner world:

Unprocessed emotional material doesn’t stay in the mind — it accumulates in the body. It shows up as chronic tension, as fatigue that doesn’t resolve, as a creeping numbness, as pain that medicine can’t fully explain. Without a daily practice of attuning, the nervous system stays in low-grade threat response — affecting sleep, immunity, hormones, mood, and the ability to think clearly.

When we lose access to interoception (our body’s signals), decision-making deteriorates. Creativity dries up. Intuition gets drowned out by the noise of constant output.

For those of us who spend our days holding space for others — professionally or simply as the person everyone turns to — we become so practiced at attuning to everyone else. Our own feelings, needs, and inner experience get pushed to the back of the queue. This then bleeds into our work, our relationships, our health. We teach presence and don’t take the time to practice it ourselves.

What’s missing is the daily practice of listening to what’s actually there.

A daily practice doesn’t have to be an hour. It can be ten seconds. But the struggle with functional freeze is that anything additional that needs to be figured out becomes too much, so figuring out what to do for a daily practice becomes another item that’s taxing an already overwhelmed nervous system.

That’s exactly what Soul Tilling solves.

One hour, once a week. I do all the prep work — I build each class around the Jewish calendar, around what’s alive in this moment in time. I choose the imagery, the journaling prompts, the somatic practices. And then I guide you as we practice it together. You feel what resonates. And you leave with something specific — a prompt, a practice, a somatic tool — that you can carry into your week and actually use. Ten seconds. One minute. However long you take. But it’s yours, and it’s daily, and it’s active.

Because as you take daily moments of attuning, you grow your adult self. The grounded, present, witnessing part of you that can show up — not just for your clients, not just for your business, not just for everyone else — but for the younger, alive parts within you that have been longing for someone to finally hear them. Every time you pause and ask, even briefly, what is going on in here — you are becoming that someone. You are building the inner capacity to be present for yourself the way you are present for everyone else.

That is not a luxury. That is the work.

This week’s book recommendation: If this email resonates with you, I recommend I Know I’m In There Somewhere by Helene Brenner. Brenner writes about the inner voice that gets buried under everyone else’s expectations, fears, and “shoulds” — and how to find your way back to it through learning to listen to what’s already there. A warm, practical guide to coming home to yourself. Order a copy here — this is an affiliate link which doesn’t cost you anything extra and helps support my work.
