A person cannot take themselves out of jail
It’s hard to do deep inner work on our own. Some people are able to — we tend to be more capable with the easier things in life. But not necessarily the deeper, more challenging areas. We will always need other people for as long as we’re in this world, and there’s no shame in that, whether that’s with a friend, a family member, or a therapist that somebody pays to help them go to that edge.
“The edge” is the end of what we already know and already feel, before the next layer is revealed to us.
To be able to work with the edge is a skill. To be able to help a client slow down enough to get there. And that’s why a lot of clients get frustrated and burnt out — I tried this modality, then that modality, and it worked until a certain point, and then I just felt like I was repeating the same things over and over again. The therapist kept asking me the same questions. And I wasn’t actually making progress. Like, I could map out my entire internal family. But I didn’t actually know how to move forward in any given way. So great — I understand everything that went on in my childhood, and why I act the way that I act. But what does this help me? How do I actually move forward in life?
To be able to work with the edge is a skill. And when a client can reach that point — it’s so incredible!
