Reframing client “pathology” as intelligent adaptation

I want to offer you a perspective that might be radical in our pathology-focused therapeutic culture:

What if nothing is actually wrong with you / your clients?

What if their nervous system responses, their emotional patterns, their ways of being in relationship – what if all of it made perfect sense given what they’ve experienced?

What if their body’s protective strategies, even the ones that feel problematic now, were actually intelligent responses to the circumstances they found themselves in?

This doesn’t mean we don’t want things to shift or change. It doesn’t mean they’re stuck with patterns that no longer serve them.

But it means we start from a place of honoring their system’s intelligence rather than treating them like something broken that needs to be fixed.

What I’ve seen is that when clients can appreciate their protective patterns rather than fight against them, healing happens more naturally.

The part that goes into freeze when conflict arises? It might have kept them safe when they were small and powerless.

The part that has difficulty trusting? It might have protected them from real harm.

The part that struggles with boundaries? It might have helped them maintain necessary relationships when they had no other options.

These parts aren’t obstacles to healing. They’re inner wisdom, trying to take care of your clients the best way they know how.

The invitation is to help clients come into relationship with these parts, to understand what they’re trying to do, and to slowly help them update their understanding of current reality.

This is so much more gentle and sustainable than fighting against themselves.

In B’Etzem, this appreciation for clients’ protective wisdom is foundational to everything we do together.
