The language of your body
We’re not going to get fluent in the language of our bodies, our emotions, our inner world, if we’re not willing to make mistakes about what we’re experiencing.
As a metaphor, sometimes when I’m trying to express something in Hebrew, I’ll say a word and immediately sense that something’s off. This isn’t quite the right word I’m looking for. I already have a sense of it, but I said it wrong.
And the same thing happens when we’re learning the language of our inner world. We might think we know what we’re feeling, and so we might name an emotion, and our body will give us that sense: no, that’s not quite it. And we can refine it. Get deeper into the nuance of what it actually is.
That’s already a step in the process. Being willing to make mistakes. Willing to think we’re feeling one thing, and discover it’s actually something else.
You can have a feelings list, a needs list — I highly recommend printing one out and keeping it handy — and just try things on. Let’s say maybe I’m feeling this, maybe I’m needing that. And your body, as you practice this, will give you that sense. Just like I (usually) know when I use the wrong word in Hebrew, you’ll start to know when you’ve hit the right one.
That’s how you become fluent.

This week’s book recommendation: Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. Brené dives deep into shame, vulnerability, and what it actually takes to show up honestly with ourselves and with others. It’s a powerful read that has influenced my journey. Order a copy [here] — this is an affiliate link which doesn’t cost you anything extra and helps support my work.
