Dishonesty in relationships

When we don’t give ourselves what we need or when we’ve built a life around not fully acknowledging what’s really going on inside of us, what ends up happening is we have two people who are being inauthentic about themselves, trying to build a relationship with each other.

And if they can’t be authentic with themselves, there’s a dance going on in the relationship where they’re not really bringing their full selves forward.

I want to say this with a lot of empathy, because I think this is such a huge struggle that we all have. This isn’t about shame. It makes sense that we get here.

But as soon as either one — or both — of them can own the fact that: oh my goodness, I haven’t been honest with myself about what I really need, what I’m really feeling, what I’m really experiencing inside — that dance starts to shift, and that can be really uncomfortable as it brings up a lot of what has been under the surface.

Truth-telling has so many ramifications. The process to get there is scary, and so I really understand why we hold back. But what comes out the other side is a relationship that’s more real. More honest. Because now both people are actually showing up as themselves.

This week’s book recommendation: Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. Brené dives deep into shame, vulnerability, and what it actually takes to show up honestly with ourselves and with others. It’s a powerful read that has influenced my journey. Order a copy [here] — this is an affiliate link which doesn’t cost you anything extra and helps support my work.
