Fire, air, water, earth — which one are you?

There are a lot of different ways of looking at the four different elements and how they relate to personality types. Different folks take on their own approach to what each type means.

The one I resonate with the most comes from a Jewish book. Click the link if you want to see more: Get Along With Everyone: Especially Those You Find Most Challenging by Rabbi Shimon Gruen. Here’s my interpretation.

A fire is a go-getter who has no issue falling down and picking themselves back up. Someone who sees something, goes for it, maybe fails, but doesn’t care. They have this energy and this burn about them. They just get back up and get things done.

Air types tend to be creative, thoughtful, going-with-the-flow kind of people.

Water types tend to have emotions that are deep within them. They don’t necessarily show their emotions. They’re generally well-liked by people, really good problem solvers, and make people feel very good about themselves.

And earths are… so complex.

Earths are grounded. Deep feelers, deep thinkers. Also go-getters — but they risk failing, and stumble with their failings, and don’t as easily get back up or move forward. Very nuanced. They see things and feel things differently than a lot of people.

I don’t think any of us is exclusively one type. We’re all a blend. We all have our main element and then our secondaries.

For fire, air, and water — each type has a set secondary. A fire might have a water secondary, or an earth secondary, or an air secondary. That’s fixed. But here’s something interesting about earths specifically. An earth’s secondary can actually change based on the circumstance they’re in. Whatever the mood is of the room — that’s where an earth will go.

Which means earths need a good toolbox. Because we’re always adapting. And that adaptation? It can be a gift…or it can be exhausting, depending on what we have to work with.

If this episode resonated with you, I recommend Get Along With Everyone: Especially Those You Find Most Challenging by Rabbi Shimon Gruen. This is the book I referenced when talking about the four element types — it’s the framework that shaped how I think about fire, air, water, and earth, and why certain people seem so different from everyone around them. If you’re a practitioner and you’re starting to see your clients through this lens, or if you recognized yourself as an Earth and want to understand that more deeply, this is where to go next.
