[Practice] Freedom of Expression

This week we talked about expression: what happens when we don’t let it out, what makes it scary, and what becomes possible when we finally do.

This practice is a chance to feel into all of that directly and to let your body show you where you are with expression right now — and what it might feel like if it could be completely free.

Give yourself a few minutes. See what comes up.

Practice: Freedom of Expression

Take a few moments to get settled. Noticing the surface beneath you, your posture, any tension you might be holding — and if it’s willing, letting it go just a little.

Bring your awareness to your breath. How full, how deep is it willing to go right now? If it’s getting stuck anywhere, place your hand there — just bringing some loving attention. Without needing to change a thing.

Now invite your body to give you its sense of expression. What comes up when you think of expressing what’s going on inside of you? Noticing what arises, and staying with it. Letting your body know that you see it. Keeping it company, exactly as it is.

See if you can find a word to describe the sensation that comes up around this. And then check — does that word match? If it does, notice the settling. If it doesn’t, try another word. Take your time.

Now invite a sense of what it would feel like if expression could be completely free. Easy. Accessible. Nothing in the way. Let that arise in its own time, without rushing.

Stay with whatever comes up. And when you’re ready, take a deep breath, and slowly return to the room.

This week’s book recommendation: If this email resonates with you, I recommend The Mindbody Prescription by Dr. John Sarno. Dr. Sarno explores the powerful connection between repressed emotions and physical symptoms — and how giving expression to what’s inside can be the path to real healing. It’s a read that genuinely changed my life. Order a copy here — this is an affiliate link which doesn’t cost you anything extra and helps support my work.
